The International Black Writers & Artists/Los Angeles is a network of authors, publishers, artists and community members including readers and arts enthusiasts dedicated to making sure Black writers and artists are published, read, seen and heard.
Past and present IBWA members and supporters include New York Times bestselling author, Eric Jerome Dickey; renowned poet, author and educator Donald Bakeer; award-winning children’s author, Karen English; award-winning poet, screenwriter, dramatist and non-fiction author, Jervey Tervalon; award-winning poet, writer and “unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles”, Wanda Coleman; Los Angeles journalist and writer Erin Aubry Kaplan; and the late bestselling sci-fi/speculative fiction author, Octavia Butler.
We provide workshops, seminars and conferences designed to improve skills, promote literacy, increase knowledge and enhance career opportunities, with an emphasis on mentoring youth and students. We offer scholarships to emerging writers and artists. We keep members informed through our quarterly newsletter and Web site.
